Description

OK. So this was a real surprise.  I didn't expect much from Sh2-27, an HII region located in the constellation of Ophiucus, just north oft he Blue Horse head.  In my star atlas it is denoted by a large faint, largely unremarkable  blob of emission. The survey images on Telescopius are difficult to interpret, since this emission feature spans many plate boundaries in the DSS.   There only a small number of images on AB, and the nebula is intriguingly chameleon-like in the images that do exist.  Some show a big ball of bright red emission, and some a more fragmentary structure with the red emission nebula intermingled with dark molecular clouds.

I am not sure which is the correct rendition, my resulting 3-panel mosaic revealed a complex shaped nebula strewn with molecular clouds covering a range of optical depths.    I had not expected Sh2-27 to reveal so much detail, and there is certainly a lot more in here that deserves follow-up at local focal lengths.

[Subtitle was added later.  Sh2-27 looks like a classic baddie space ship from Star Trek e.g. Shrike from Picard Season 3 & Nero's spaceship in the Star Trek JJ Abrahams movie.
Somewhat fitting -  give the central star name.]
